Emiratisation

Standard Chartered is one of the world’s leading international banks, leading the way in Asia, Africa and the Middle East and we are amongst the longest-serving banks in the UAE. The Bank has 60,000 employees worldwide, representing over 100 nationalities which is a true testimony of our global commitment to develop local talents in all the countries where we do business. This blends naturally with the Bank’s commitment to Diversity & Inclusion, which is at the heart of our values.

In all the Bank’s territories, our workforce predominantly comprises local nationals. We are able to offer international exposure and are committed to developing world class professionals in domestic and international markets. We support our employees to reach their full potential by helping them to create a robust and inclusive meritocracy.

We bring the same enthusiasm of support and commitment to the UAE and Emiratisation is the central tenet of our business strategy. It is an integral part of our ambition to develop the banking sector of this country, and we were delighted to be honoured with the Human Resource Development Award by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Ruler of Sharjah and Member of the Supreme Council, and Ahmed Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman of the UAE Human Resource Development Committee in the Banking and Financial sector earlier this year for our commitment to Emiratisation. We have consistently met the nationalisation targets set by the UAE government, and have a strong commitment to development and long-term career progression of the UAE nationals.

Our Emiratisation objectives are built around three fundamental pillars – Attract the right candidates, Develop them and Retain talent.

For that we have joined hands with several prestigious institutions in the UAE, and in particular we have five initiatives:

  • Al Mawarid Induction Programme developed with the Emirates Institute of Banking & Finance in Sharjah (EIBFS) to provide trainees the fundamental principles of banking operations. Standard Chartered was honored by EIBFS for its continued commitment to Emiratisation. H.E Ahmed Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman of the UAE Human Resource Development Committee in the Banking and Financial sector handed over the recognition award for the continued partnership with EIBFS.

  • An Entry Level Banking Curriculum’ - Partnering up with Tanmia, we have developed two levels of training programmes for our staff; which provides new recruits with the knowledge and confidence to fit into their assigned job roles.

  • Standard Chartered Bank has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) in Abu Dhabi, one of the largest colleges in the UAE, aimed at developing a strong Emirati workforce and creating an indigenous training pool for the bank. In collaboration with HCT we have a world-class executive education programme called the MIT Sloan Management Programme. It has been presented by one of the world’s top business schools, the Sloan School of Business of MIT in the USA.

  • The Al Tahadi Educational Support Programme – This is a programme that provides select UAE national students with strong financial support while they are completing their studies, and then guarantees them access to global opportunities at a leading international bank. We currently have over 100 candidates. This programme will ensure an increased number of talented UAE nationals who will soon join us on our local graduate programme.

  • In July 2006, Standard Chartered signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC)

    1. To design and offer specialised seminars and training programmes for UAE National employees of DIFC and SCB;
    2. To establish internship programmes to help build on-the-job skills;
    3. To expose selected DIFC employees to commercial banking best practice through, for example, visits to SCB branches around the world.
These are some of the most comprehensive training schemes in the UAE and it shows that Standard Chartered sincerely believes in professional training for, not only the UAE nationals, but anyone who comes to work with Standard Chartered.

Standard Chartered also provides global career opportunities to our employees. With over 14 million customers globally and 1,400 branches in over 56 countries in the Asia Pacific Region, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the United Kingdom and the Americas, we are focused on becoming the ‘World’s Best International Employer of Choice’, and offer career opportunities to all our employees across the markets.
